The Institute of Chiropodists and Podiatrists Lower Limb Skin Surgery Course in partnership with the Association of Surgeons in Primary Care
The Institute of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, with over 80 year’s experience supporting and training chiropody and podiatry professionals across the entire profession of podiatry and podiatric medicine, have partnered with the Association of Surgeons in Primary Care (ASPC) to offer this ground breaking Lower Limb Skin Surgery course!
ABOUT THE ASPC
The ASPC are a dynamic and evolving organisation who exist to provide support, training and professional development for providers of Primary Care Surgery in the UK. The ASPC are affiliated with the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and have links with the Royal College of General Practitioners, the Association of Surgeons in Training, the British Association of day surgery and the PCSA, (ASPC sister organisation in the Republic of Ireland).
These affiliations establish the ASPC as being at the forefront of minor surgery within the community.
ABOUT THE COURSE
This course is designed to educate podiatrists on all aspects and considerations for minor surgery, from lesion recognition to legal requirements, through to performing minor surgery.
The course comprises 3 stages:
- Online learning modules
- Interactive cohort learning via Zoom
- Practical

Interactive cohort meeting via Zoom:
This 1-day live session will provide students the opportunity, as a group, to ask questions from their learning modules. Students will also be taught additional modules including:
- Local Anaesthesia revision
- CQC requirements
- Indemnity & Insurance
- Legal considerations
- Introduction to electrosurgery
Practical
A full 1-day, intensive practical workshop, held in Sutton Coldfield. Students will be taught how to mark, excise and suture. This is done using raw pigs skin. By the end of this practical session students will be able to confidently perform an excision and close.
After the course is completed to the satisfaction of tutors, Podiatrists with POM – A and POM – S annotations to their registration can perform the following minor surgical procedures:
- nail surgery and nail bed procedures on the foot and which are carried out using local anaesthesia (or no anaesthesia)
- curettage (scraping), cautery (burning) or cryocautery (freezing) of warts, verrucae or other skin lesions on any area of the foot and which are carried out using local anaesthesia (or no anaesthesia)
ABOUT THE TUTORS
Dr. Soon Lim
Dr Lim is Director of Minor Surgery for RCGP Thames Valley together with 7 other faculties of the Royal College, and the President and educational lead of the Association of Surgeons in Primary Care (ASPC). Dr Lim is an expert witness on the issue of GP minor surgery and is committed to education and maintaining standards in primary care surgery in UK General Practice.
Martin Harvey
Martin is a podiatrist independent prescriber whose own dermoscopy and minor surgery training included weekly sessions in a hospital dermatology skin surgery clinic over several months. He works in both independent and NHS primary and secondary care including an NHS ‘choose and book’ clinic dealing mainly with GP referred minor surgical procedures. He believes passionately that the ‘blank space’ that exists between the simple nail surgery and basic local anaesthesia taught in the podiatry degree and the complex reconstructive technique and advanced local anaesthesia of full podiatric surgery is an area that all podiatrists should consider entering.
WHO CAN APPLY
- HCPC registered podiatrists with POM A and POM S / SP / or IP.
COST
The course fee is £995 for IoCP members and £1,200 non-members.
